Handover – Year 7 to Year 8

It is hard to believe that we are already nearing the end of this academic year and it is time to start looking forward to welcoming the pupils who will be joining us in Year 7 in September 2024.

Due to all the work that Mr Price and Mrs Stone are doing in order to welcome the new cohort of pupils, from Monday 1st July, Mr Jones and Mrs Lockhart, will take over as the Head of Year and Assistant Head of Year of our current Year 7 pupils.

I know that Mr Price and Mrs Stone have very much enjoyed their time with Year 7 and that Mr Jones and Mrs Lockhart are looking forward to taking over the reins!

Resource Base visit to Hylands Park

On Wednesday, some of our Resource Base pupils attended an activity day at Hylands Park with other Deaf pupils from similar provision around Essex.

Although it was a very hot day, everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and had a great time catching up with old friends and making some new friends too.

Key Stage 3 District Athletics

Last Thursday a group of our Key Stage 3 pupils attended the District Athletics Competition at Melbourne Park in Chelmsford. It was a fantastic event with a high display of talent on show throughout the day.

Well done to all pupils who competed, they were a real credit to our school. A special mention must go to all our medallists…

Rutherford Lab Oxford

Y10 pupils travelled to Oxford University’s Laser & Particle physics site.
There was an opportunity to spend time with experts in their fields to gain insights into how laser technology is developing, particularly in the contexts of medicine and pure academic research.

There was a ‘Wonder marquee’ which had a great many stalls including space exploration with aspects of robotics, sustainability, nutrition, satellite parts and telescopy.

The idea behind the visit was to inspire further study and careers in STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths).

There are many excellent UK universities collaborating with teams right across the world progressing and challenging our understanding of the universe and everything within it.

One of our guides spoke about the use of lasers in microscopy and another how a very powerful laser on the site is used to shatter rock such as meteorites and then collect the material for analysis.

The event was not all serious, with some activities shown in some of the photos.

One popular activity, which got very competitive, was throwing balls from beach ball to table tennis sized with as much force as possible against wind chimes, modelling how hard different types of radiation are to block with materials such as concrete, steel and lead.

All the pupils were excellent ambassadors for the school, perhaps a future Nobel Prize winner in their midst?

Chessington – Business Studies

After the session, students eagerly explored the park, experiencing the exhilarating Vampire roller coaster and the thrilling Croc Drop, all while enjoying the warm weather.

It was wonderful to see the pupils not only having fun but also actively discussing with me the marketing techniques they observed around the park, all on their own initiative and unprompted, during the queues. This practical application of their classroom knowledge in a real-world setting was impressive.

I hope all our business pupils have an amazing summer break and return refreshed, ready to put in maximum effort to secure their grades in the next academic year.
